Ages: Generally 13 & 14.
Ice Time: Approximately two sixty minute practices including skills clinics and one league game per week.
Location: Area rinks.
Description: Players on Bantam teams will be entered into the Valley Hockey League for game play. Games are hosted at various local rinks. Games consist of three twelve minute periods, full ice sheets, and certified referees. Game jerseys with name plate are provided for each player, with the game jersey turned in at the end of the season. You can expect between 25 and 30 games per season in Valley League action. League playoffs are held in April.
Practices are held primarily at the Groton School and Lawrence Academy, with some early season and late season practices held at other local rinks. The number of teams will be dependent on the number of children registered. Teams will consist of between 12 and 16 skaters and one or two goalies.
In addition to single league play, each Bantam team will have the opportunity to participate in the Groton Crusaders Youth Hockey’s Christmas Tournament (Tourney in the Woods) which is held each year from December 26th thru December 30th. The tournament provides a minimum of three games, with a potential fourth game if the team makes the finals. In order to participate in the tournament, each team’s parents/guardians are required to help run the tournament.
Players entering the Bantam level are expected to be proficient skaters, with full knowledge of game play. Coaches will focus on more advanced skills regarding skating and stick handling. Lines will be more set, with emphasis on passing plays, basic cycles, and breakout plays. Specialty skills such as plays off the face off, and power plays will be developed.
